Shipibo Making Face Masks Artisan Story
Peru

CSE:shipibo_group_350x285

The Shipibo peoples are found in remote parts of the Amazon river basin. Even with contact to the developed world growing daily, the tribes have maintained a culture rooted in and to their ancestral environment. Every facet of their lives is influenced by the natural world. This aspect of their culture is reflected in art such as these eye pillows and sachets.

These unique cotton face masks were produced by indigenous Shipibo women living in the Amazon Rainforests of Peru. Each mask is assembled with two layers of cotton; the outer layer is brown with traditional Shipibo designs whose tradition dates back hundreds of years. All colors (the brown and the black) are produced from natural plant-based dyes found in their environment.

The inner layer is a tightly-woven black cotton providing the wearer more protection, but comfortable. Each mask also has two loops whose loose weave permits you to secure the mask around the ears.

The masks also have a flexible wire sewn into the middle of the top-edge so that you can comfortably form the mask around your nose.
